"More than Family Trees: Understanding Chinese Genealogies and Their History."
By Xin Yu
Chinese genealogies are far more than simple family trees—they are elaborate books, often produced as printed volumes. As the most popular books in premodern China, genealogies can still be found in almost every village in southern China today. They gained popularity in Chinese villages between 1450 and 1950, evolving continuously in format, style, and content. This talk will introduce the structure, contents, and format of Chinese genealogies, as well as their changes over time.
Xin Yu is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the History Department at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His research interests include the histories of Chinese families, books, and the environment. At UWM, he teaches courses on Chinese history, Asian history, and history of the family. His website is https://xinyuhistory.com/.
Join us: IN PERSON for meeting.
This meeting will be recorded and for 30 days after the presentation, a video link will be available to MCGS members in the members only section on the website.

Sunday, October 5 through Saturday, October 12
Trip - Salt Lake City, UT - 2025 - TENTATIVE DATES (MCGS Trips)
Salt Lake City, UT
TENTATIVE DATES!!!
Save the Date — October 5-12, 2025
Genealogy Research to
SALT LAKE CITY OCTOBER 2025 TRIP!
By Dan Berg
We’re excited to announce that tentative dates for the next Salt Lake City genealogy trip are Sunday, October 5 — Sunday, October 12, 2025.
A tentative group block hotel reservation has been made at the Plaza Hotel once again. These dates are somewhat flexible so those who wish to arrive/depart sooner or later than should be able to do so. At this early stage, this is just an FYI to mark your calendars. More details, deadlines, costs, etc. will be forthcoming in future Reporters.
If you’re wondering WHY GO TO SLC?, be sure to see the “Life-Changing Genealogy Research Trip to Salt Lake City!” article in the August 2024 Reporter which will hopefully inspire you to consider coming!
Look for more exciting updates in early 2025!
What? Genealogical research for a week at the largest genealogical library in the world!
Where? Family Search Library in Salt Lake City, Utah
https://www.familysearch.org/en/library/
When? TENTATIVE DATES: October 5-12, 2025. It’s a Sunday to Sunday trip to maximize research time since the library is closed on Sundays.
How Much? For hotel + airfare from MKE we are expecting the cost to be in the upper (to be announced) range +/- per person, for a double-occupancy hotel room at the Plaza Hotel by Temple Square adjacent to the library. A single occupant supplement will be likely in the (to be announced) range +/-.
Why? To have a world-class genealogical research experience and break down those ‘brick walls’ with assistance from library genealogical experts, as well as great comradery with your fellow MCGS members!
You will not regret coming on this trip, it’s an unbelievable experience!!!
