Death of William Smith
Posted: 01/17/2019 - 12:07 am
Hello. I am trying to determine when exactly my 3rd great grandfather, William W. Smith died. The family was in Milwaukee by 1863 at the latest, when his 3rd son, William Walter.was born there.

William W. Smith was married to Mary Gordon in Onandaga Co, New York in 1848, and was in Wisconsin on the 1850 census with 2 foster children. Their children were Willard Huntington.(abt 1851), Mary Isabel (1857) (married Fogg), William Walter (1860), John Arthur (1862), George T. (1863), and Gertrude Frothingham (1865) (married Grange). Mary Gordon Smith died in Milwaukee 11 March 1895. The last record I have of William is in the 1866 Milwaukee city directory, and a family belief that he died IEARLY IN 1870, maybe February. I am also wondering if the William W. Smith who was in the 21st Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War is my William W. Smith (he would have been about 40 years old in 1863).

Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

Hi Janelle,

What sources have you already looked at to determine your William's death date, place? What is the source of the family belief that he died in early 1870?
