“Learning ALL about the FamilySearch.org One World Tree: How do I do this? How do I do that?”

by Mary Jurgaitis

I began officially helping others with their family history in about 2015. Since that time there have been so many changes to FamilySearch that I have a hard time keeping up. BUT my strength is the basics. I tell those I'm helping that I'm very PICKY – picky in directing those I am helping to tell me exactly why they are attaching a particular source to a person. I don't let a person “attach” until they have given ME a reason for attaching the source. Then I lead them to fill in the “Reason This Source Is Attached.” I use the phrase “Willy Nilly” in describing those who add a source without going through what it takes to put their family together and know that it is correct.

I can show how to add an external source and do a correct merge. When I am serving in my volunteer position at the FamilySearch Center in Hales Corners, Wisconsin, I have an assistant. My assistant (plus other volunteers at the FamilySearch Center) are fantastic. I let them carry the ball for their expertise in their areas of research.

I am of English and Dutch ancestry. I have been on this earth for 83 years. I have six children, four boys and two girls. They carry my ancestry plus my husband's: Lithuanian, German, Pomeranian, Norwegian, and a little Irish sprinkled in there.

I became interested in exploring my family history more than 30 years ago. I started with PAF Software. The software was no longer being updated. A couple of different forms of FamilySearch were used under different designations. I dabbled a little bit in that but was distracted by life. When FamilySearch first launched in 1999, I was one of those who helped make the website crash after a few short minutes online. I didn't get back to working on my family history until about 2014 and I haven't stopped since.
